It was way back in 1954 that Maharashtrians in Dilli hosted the Marathi Sahitya Sammelan. Social and cultural organisations in the national capital, fresh with success of hosting first ever 'Diwali Pahat' at India Gate lawns followed by Zee Marathi's immensely popular show "Chala Hava Yeu Dya" at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), now dream of doing something that has not happened since 1954- host the 91st Akhil Bhartiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan.

Dilli Marathi Pratishthan, not even one year old sent a letter to the Mahamandal that it was ready to host the Sammelan in the capital.

The Mahamandal's "Sthal Nivad Samiti" (committee to finalise host city) visited Dilli on August 19 and was taken round the city's historic Chouguley High School and Nutan Bharat Marathi School as also the IGNCA to show the places where the Sammelan could be held. Mahamandal Adhyaksh Shripad Bhalchandra Joshi addressed a meeting organised by the Pratishthan

An assortment of Marathis in Delhi- from school teachers to classical singers, houswives, diplomats, officers and journalists gathered at the conference room of the IGNCA to make an impassionate plea in one voice- to give Delhi a chance to host the 91st Sammelan.

The Sthal Nivad Samiti of the Mahamandal will meet in Nagpur on September 10 to finalise the host city. The Samiti will visit Baroda and Hivra Bajar in Buldana district before meeting in Nagpur. In the meantime, Delhiites keep their fingers crossed and wait for the D Day!
